How much carbon can you remove by re-timing alone?

The same scheduled job can carry a very different carbon footprint depending on when and where on the GB grid it runs. Across the past year, a 4-hour workload in the higher-carbon half of Great Britain could typically have cut its emissions by 25–40% simply by moving to a greener window the same day.

That is the national picture. This pilot measures your number — with real data, on your real job list — and how much of it is removable purely by re-timing: no infrastructure change, no code change, and no reduction in work done.

What GridIQ does

Recommends the window — your team runs the job

GridIQ turns live and 48-hour-forecast carbon-intensity data (National Grid ESO, all 14 GB grid regions) into scheduling decisions. Upload a job list — durations, deadlines, locations — and it returns the recommended run window and location for each job, plus the measured CO₂ difference versus your current schedule.

Pilot structure

Six weeks, fixed scope

  1. Week 1

    Scoping call

    Agree the success metric and the job sample — we suggest 20–100 recurring batch jobs. You export a job list (CSV or Excel: schedule name, typical duration, deadline/window, location).

  2. Weeks 2–5

    Optimise and measure

    GridIQ produces optimised schedules. Your team applies re-timings where operationally acceptable — even a subset is fine; unmoved jobs are part of the result too. We monitor, alert on greener windows, and track actuals.

  3. Week 6

    Results report

    Delivered and walked through with both your sustainability and ops contacts.

What you get

A number, not a narrative

  • A measured number: tonnes CO₂e avoided versus your baseline schedule, per job and in total, calculated from actual regional grid intensity — measured operational abatement for net-zero and ESG reporting (SECR, TCFD/ISSB, CSRD where applicable), not a modelled estimate.
  • A per-job optimisation report: current versus recommended window/location, and the carbon delta for each.
  • A view of which job categories carry the most movable carbon — useful even if you never move them.
  • Full platform access for the pilot team throughout.
What we need from you

About ten hours, total

  • One sponsor contact and one engineer/ops contact — roughly two hours per fortnight, ten hours across the whole pilot.
  • The job list export. No system access required: GridIQ never connects to or executes anything in your environment.
  • A success metric agreed in week 1 (for example, “≥ X% carbon reduction across the sampled jobs”), so the pilot has a pass/fail answer.
Security & data

No integration. No credentials. No access.

Pilot data is limited to job metadata — names, durations, windows and locations. No business data ever leaves your environment, and GridIQ has no route into your systems: you send a spreadsheet, we send back recommendations. We're happy to complete a lightweight security questionnaire before you commit.

No system access

Nothing is installed, nothing is connected, nothing is executed in your environment.

Metadata only

Job name, duration, window, location. No payloads, no logs, no business data.

You execute

GridIQ recommends a window. Your existing scheduler and your team trigger the run.

What it costs: nothing

The pilot is free, in exchange for two things — permission to cite the aggregate result (anonymised by sector, so “a UK financial-services organisation”, if you prefer), and a 30-minute feedback session at the end. If the pilot passes its success metric, we'll propose commercial options — including running GridIQ inside your own environment under a source licence, if that's your preference.

Based on National Grid ESO regional carbon-intensity data for all 14 GB grid regions, 10 August 2025 to 10 August 2026. Modelled as a 4-hour workload, comparing its scheduled window against the lowest-intensity 4-hour window available in the same region on the same day. Figures are medians across 365 days for the seven highest-intensity GB regions: 25% assumes ±6 hours of deadline flexibility, 40% assumes full-day flexibility. Your own figure depends on your regions, run windows and deadline flexibility — which is precisely what the pilot measures.
